GM, General MIDI represents 128 assigned voices that are common throughout the industry.

GS is a further version that adds the ability to access 128 banks of voices, based upon the GM set.

An easy way to explain this is: You are going to hear a concert, There are 128 seats in each row. There are 128 rows. As long as you know what your seat number is and row number is you will be seatd in the correct seat. There are 16,384 seats in the auditorium and still it is very easy to find your seat.

GS MIDI makes it possible for you to access as many as 16,384 voices using only two commands, Voice and Variation.
