PR-300™ Overview

The Rodgers® PR-300™ began its life as a Roland® MT series sequencer and voice module.

The sequencer part processed MIDI playing information, storing it, editing it and replaying it as needed, by means of in internal 3.5" floppy disk.

The voice module part houses a library of 300+ instrument samples, synthesizer sounds and sound effects, with speakers inside and stereo 1/4" jacks on the back and an earphone jack for listening.

The voices are grouped om the General Midi (GM) set order, Piano, Bells, Organs, Guitar...and so on.

None of the voices on the PR-300™ are organ voices, meaning, you will not find a "better" swell reed chorus. The few organ sounds on it are what we might call "entertainment organ" samples. The PR-300™ fills the need for expansion of the organ into serving the needs of contemporary music and worship.

The entry-level MT series module came with a simple disk player or the larger one, the MT 200, had a record and play disk drive. While keyboards with voices and sequencers combined on board were common, building this device was ground-breaking, as Roland® saw the need and market for a MIDI-based portable player.

What separates the MT from the PR is a bit of software engineering that automatically assigns some of the MIDI channels to the PR voice module and the rest to the Rodgers® Organ upon boot-up. This is a default setting, but it can also be modified to work with other MIDI equipment and their own unique MIDI channel configuration.

The level of compatibility between the Rodgers® Organ and the PR-300™ Module is so comprehensive that it is possible to utilize the PR-300™ as a voice module even if the PR-300™ is hidden away in the drawer underneath the organ, out of site and untouched. It even turns on and off automatically with the organ.

The PR-300™ writes in a propriety disk filing system that stores two files for each MIDI song recorded. The Standard Midi File file system has been adopted in the industry, which saves all the song information in one files, called an SMF. The PR-300™ will read and plays SMF's. The PR-300™S will also save files in the SMF format upon request.

Typically a piece of MIDI equipment ends up having great supporters as well as detractors. The PR-300™ is very well accepted and criticism of the unit is rare.

What problems can one experience with the unit? Actual failure within the unit is extremely rare and repairs are few and far between. The majority of the "problems" seen with the unit tend to be with understanding the unit, what it is capable of and putting the unit to work for you in a way to enhances your ability to play the organ and provide musical support for your congregation.

For that reason the following FAQ has been created and is being added to as new ideas and understandings of the PR-300™ evolve.

The PR-300™ manual is very thorough. In most cases the FAQ's listed are clarifications in one way or another of what the owners manual says, in different wording.

 Frequently Asked Questions
 What are SMF files? .
SMF  SMF's are Standard Midi Files, files that have the suffix .mid at the end of their name.

How do I save files in SMF format on a PR-30OS?
SMF   Hold down STOP first and then press SAVE.

When I try to save SMF's on a PR disk I already have files on, the screen display reads NOT SMF DISK.
DISK  The Roland® native format files and SMF files cannot share the same disk. If you are successful in getting them on the same disk, for example, by loading on a computer, one of the types of files will not appear on the PR-300™ window. It's still on the disk, but the directory will not permit listing both kinds of files at the same time in the PR window.

I tried to use a new disk in the PR-300™(S) and the screen read MASTER DISK and would not record.
DISK  Take the disk out, put it in a PC, do an EASY FORMAT. A FULL FORMAT will not solve the problem.

I did an EASY FORMAT (PC) or DOS FORMAT (MAC) on my computer. Do I need to do a PR300 FORMAT too?
  DISK  Usually not.

How many MIDI channels can I record on the PR?
CHANNELS 16. Bill Betts points out that you can record MIDI voices on channels 1-9, rhythm on 10, I I through 16 are automatically assigned to the organ. This can be changed but this is the mode the PR is programmed to wake up in.

When I record just a registration and then recall it by playing it from the PR-300™ why don't the MIDI voices work?
Voices Tell. the PR to play in the registration. When it stops, push the MIDI couplers manually and they will have your voices on them. The PR voices are accessed directly from disk so the couplers do not light, even though you have programmed them.

Suddenly the PR-300™ won't play any midi voices, but does sequence the organ properly. What's wrong?
Dead Voices Common problem. Check the volume control slider on the PR. It has probably been moved from the middle position (best place to keep it) to the far left, effectively muting all MIDI voices.

What is the difference between the PR-300™ and the later PR-300™S
300/300S The PR-300™ reads and writes files to disk normally in a proprietary Roland® format. It can also read SMF files. The PR-300™S does all of this and writes SMF files on request as well. A list member kindly adds the information that the S editing functions are expanded.

I want to edit SMF MIDI events on a MAC. What program should I use?
SMF editing MIDIGRAPHY is a great shareware program for the MAC. http://member.nifty.ne.jp/mmaeda/e/works.html

I am using a MIDI module with a Rodgers® Organ and I get piano all the time, What should do?
Disable the Master Channels on the organ using the owners manual. CH 12, 13 & 14 play constantly..even without the MIDI pisotns activated. The PR-300™ uses this configuration so it is the default.

PR-300™ not working right?

Sometimes we can make changes to channels and midi settings that we forget about. What's soft thru mean anyway?

In the owner's manual you will find a list of default settings for the controls. However, we have seen a few isolated cases where large SMF files seem to change settings withintthe PR-300™ on their own, disabling functions of the device.

The Reset Procedure has been provided by a user. It does not appear in the owner's manual. It is part of a test menu. Do not change any of the other T-settings if you do the procedure. Change only T-15. We suggest you refer any questions about the other T settings to a qualified technician.

Read the disclaimer above? Ok, click here for the RESET PROCEDURE.
