It’s operating the organ that’s hard.

That used to be true.

In the 1907’s the first computer capture actions began to appear.  Around for more than a hundred years (and even longer in a primitive form), these make it possible to preset the stops on an organ so that you need only press a button, nicely placed in rows under keyboards, to select totally different stop settings.

This was always the hardest part of playing the organ.  To change sounds on the piano, you may press the SUSTAIN pedal which lets all the strings ring out, or hold the SOFT pedal to make it play softer. So for a pianist, the organ and all its voices seem like an insurmountable instrument, more complicated that calling out plays for a football team.

Today, to play an organ, it as simple as turning it on, opening the hymnal, setting the volume pedal, pressing a piston, and when it is time to sing, pressing PLAY.

In our guide to seeking a new organist or a person to operate the organ while it plays MIDI files we outline the  what you need to do to get the organ playing again and even getting it playing in a way that can even create new organists for you.
