From my perusal of your "On Jordan's Bank" (from 201 Hymn Prelude Miniatures) the subdued trumpet call introduction seemed sheer magic, as the text goes onto say, "Announces that the Lord is nigh". Further, to be able to introduce a poignant thought in a short composition, as you do, shows more than expertise; rather genius at work.

I am writing this to recommend the organ preludes written by Mark Winchester. I have used them at every service and have received very complimentary remarks about them. What is so unique and wonderful about them is the fact that they are very easy to sight read, yet they are rich in harmony and style. I come from a strong piano major background so playing the organ is always a challenge. These pieces were a delight to play and I could voice (registrate) them with ease as Mr. Winchester gave excellent suggestions for performance. I also believe these would be an excellent source for educational studies in organ or sacred music performance majors. I am recommending them to my colleagues at various universities and colleges.
- Dr. Marilyn Michael (Music/Humanities Professor, St. Petersburg College)

I have had the pleasure of performing, and leading in performance, Mark Winchester's "Tudor Tantar" (for brass quintet), on a number of occasions. It is a work of symmetry, engaging tonalities, and elegant simplicities, highly enjoyable to play and a treat for the ears. Furthermore, it is extremely well written for the chamber brass ensemble. The technical demands on the performers are modest (for professional players) and I would judge moderately demanding for students. The nobility of song implied in the notation provides a strong impulse for natural phrasing.
-Robert W. Smith (Principal Trumpet, The Florida Orchestra)

I was pleased to get a copy of "Ground Bass for String Orchestra" from our local composer, Mark Winchester. Studying the score, I found so many things that I look for when selecting music for my own school orchestra. The viola part is often overlooked, but here the violas are offered the melody on several occasions. I know my students will enjoy playing this piece when the school year begins.
-Stephen Cantin (Director of Instrumental Music, Palm Harbor University High School)

I just felt compelled to extol upon your recent monumental accomplishment of composing some two-hundred preludes on well-known hymns of Christendom. You must be exhausted after such intense (and relatively short) period of composition. Your hymn preludes, I am sure, will be an extremely useful collection to the busy church musician. Your choral setting of the "Magnificat" (from your Anglican Evensong Service) is still fondly mentioned following its premier here at Prince of Peace Church over a year ago at our annual Lessons and Carols (Advent 2003).
-Donald M. Rolander (Music Director, Prince of Peace Church

Thank you for your interesting program and your fine playing. I enjoyed everything about it, from your colorful registrations, to your clear articulation. It was first-rate, and I know the congregation greatly enjoyed it. Your improvisation on "Good King Wenceslaus" ( appears as number 175 in the 201 Hymn Preludes) was perfect and charming -- and many people commented on that. I don't know that it would ever have struck me to incorporate that tune on just the right day, December 26, but I'm glad it occurred to you!
-Robert McCormick (Music Director, Church of St. Mary the Virgin)

Mark Winchester has worked in many fields of the arts...but his greatest work may be as a composer. His works show a polished manner of work, with great attention to details and musicality.

The WHITE HERON MARCH comes right out of the Sousa March Era, just as exciting and thrilling.

201 Hymn Tune Prelude Miniatures show an amazing skill at writing music that takes on American, French and other styles of composition.

A former Fulbright Scholar, he now lives in Florida.
