Unedited Bank of FreeStop's Instructions
Using the MX-200 with the XV Editor and Librarian created for it by
Roland, you can make your own organ stops and multi-rank stop settings.
In the spirit of openness that Rodsgers is famous for, we at Frog Music
have created FreeStops™, the first has been loaded to the files page at
the home page of the MXMR Users Group page.
This is a Tibia, Vox Humana and String stop combination that will work
from one MIDI piston.
It may be loaded to your MX-200 using the XV Editor or Librarian
Program to Bank 87.
We invite others to help build the library!
The Librarian and editor program download will not work because the XV
Editor Script does not recognize a card with the number 99, which is
the number assigned to the Rodgers Pipe Stops Card.
However, there is a copy of the amended script floating around...BUT IS
NOT SUPPORTED BY RODGERS...which means if you have never jaywalked in
your life, run a red light in a small town at four am and so on, stop
reading.

If you choose this alternate path in life, you will find yourself
creating stops, assigning as many as 8 pipe organ voices to one piston
(watch the polyphony limits, please) creating some wonderful Theater
Organ Registrations (RTOU MEMBERS EARS WHOULD BE PERKED UP NOW) and so
on.
Remember, you cannot go to Rodgers for help. Engineering decided upon
the creation of the module that Rodgers would not support use of the
editor and librarian program.

A bank of stops that I like to use to beef up the Insignia and
Allegiant Organs (and older PDI) is on teh files page under IO....
Everybody with any Rodgers pre-Trillium Organ or II Manual Trillium or
Allegiant's and Insignia's should buy an MX-200. Now!
The reason is that not only can you add much needed stops you do not
have, you can thicken adn fill out Principal, Flute, String and Reed
Choruses very, very effectively.
I hope to post some audio samples shortly to show how effective this is.
I had the opportunity to use an MX-200 today with a Rodgers PDI 835...a
two manual digital Rodgers with single MIDI Pistons per division. With
FreeStops™ I was able to use all the 76 additional pipe organ stops,
plus about 50 more stops and stop combinations.
For example, when playing a stop setting including all Principals,
Mixtures and the Swell 16,8,4 reed chorus, I was able to add a four
rank mixture and another 16,8,4 reed chorus...all on one MIDI piston.
Playing quietly on the 8' stops on the organ, coupled SW to GT,
including Celestes, I was able to add four more stops, an English
Diapason, Flute, Gamba and quiet Oboe...what a sound!

B. Installation - XV Editor & Librarian Programs
1. Install the USB Driver first.
2. Plug in a USB cable between the MX and the Computer.
3. Disconnect any MIDI Cables from the MX-200
4. Install the Editor and Librarian software that you have downloaded.
If you have difficulty installing the software, email fhe MXMR Users Group for
assistance with your computer configuration.
5. During the install wizard process, choose CUSTOM INSTALLATION, then deselect
the XV-5050 and XV-5080 files.

C. Setting up the MX-200 Device File
1. After the installation of the Editor and Librarian, you need to open the
EDITOR.
2. Make sure you have the MX-200 turned on.
3. Go to SETUP
4. Select Setup MIDI Device.
5. Choose the XV-2020 for all locations.
6. Close the program
7. Open the XV Librarian and do 3 - 6 above again.

D. Accessing the EXP Board Voices
At this pont your MX-200 will be recognized by the Editor, but the Rodgers Organ
Expansion Card Voices are not accessible.
Use the replacement XML File that will give you access to read the EXP Card
voices and a
SMF to load some test voices.
1. Extract the MX200ADV822.zip files downloaded from www.froglegmusic.com to:
Windows Computers: C:\Program Files\Roland
MAC Computers: Applications\Roland
2. Go to that folder and open the MX200ADV822 folder.
3. Select MX-2020EditorScript
4. Drag this file to the desktop
5. Open the Roland Folder
6. Select XVEditor Folder and open it.
7. Drag the MX-2020EditorScript from the desktop into this folder.
8. Select the XV-2020EditorScript in this folder and DELETE it.
9. Click on the name of the MX-2020EditorScript and change MX to XV
10. Close all folders.
11. Open the XV Editor Program
12. Enter the Setup window again and choose Setup Expansion Boards.
14, For EXP-A choose SRX-99.
You have now installed a modified Script which gives you access to the Rodgers
Pipe
Organ Stops Card, Expansion Card 99.

E. Access and Use
1. Select from the Upper Left Button Box:
PATCH and USER
2. Click on the DOWN arrow on the right of PATCH NAME Display.
3. Choose Expansion A
4. Numbers 1 through 76 are the Preset Rodgers Organ Pipe Organ Stops
The User Bank is now activated.

• This one I have to think about. If you all wonder why I know so
little...what we are going to do next is experiment, together, to find
answers to these questions, and during which we will learn what
modifications we can do using the editor software.
I did some experimentation, using what I was able to learn from stops
created by another person, and did some of the higher numbered
stops....his start at 77 and go up.
The Spanish Trumpet stops are mine and are dismal failures, and we will
investigate that too.

Upon further review...the stops that say they are *1: Linked ti organ's
tremulant are all available at another PC number in the list with
tremulant...this may indicate that?
1. The tremulant control, when activated, changes the PC number
2. The tremulant control, when activated, sends a MIDI message that
activates...
Ok, it's #2. After looking at the editor while selecting the stops...
When the Kinura is activated, the LFO1 Depth controls are set at: Pitch
0 and TVF 0
So, to fix the Clarinet 8 T to have the tremulant it is missing, change
the LFO1 (fourth panel down) RATE to 86, PITCH to 3 and TVF to 18.
Click on the slider to show the number.
RATE 86
PITCH 3
TVF 18
Kinura T changes them to Pitch 7 and TVF 16.
This sound will play, but is not saved.
To save it:
Go to the top panel and note the current voice number, the PROGRAM
CHANGE or PC. It's 80
Click on WRITE to the right of NUMBER.
Select 80 (which should be highlighted already since you are wokring on
voice 80)
Click OK to save this change.
• Additional info:
False "stereo effect"
Look on the third panel, find WG. Note that this clarinet is not
stereo, but playing only from the L side.
Go back down to the LFO1 panel section.
Chance the DEPTH PAN to 30...and now, especially is you are listening
through headphones like I am, you will have introduced a phase shift
between L and R as this L placed sample moves from L to R.
If you like this or a similar effect, remember to WRITE it to save it.

I followed all of the instructions in the lessons. All worked out
perfectly. Thanks to all who made this possible. I have a question,
however. It seems that all 127 places are filled with the voices that
loaded from the lessons. I'd like to try a few others, but now need
to know where they will go and how they are to be accessed. There was
one posted some time ago with tibias, vox, and strings. I downloaded
that file, but don't know how to access it. Can anyone shed some
light on this?

As I was driving along today, I said to myself, it's time for another
lesson...and you proved it!
As a prelude:
Open the XV EDitor
Select USER & PATCH in the box on the upper left.
Tell it to IMPORT SMF....under file.
Choose the TibVoxStr.
It will load.
Play it.
Then we will learn to save it.
In the next lesson.
Following that we will begin to build a stop.

Yes, what you do is replace one of them with the voice you have loaded
from the SMF file, or have created yourself. I do not have my setup
working right now, so that is holding me up at tellign you exactly what
to do, but once you have it (the smf voice loaded, it shoudl play from
the keybaortd, then you can write it to one of the 128 positions in
bank 87.

A Scharf and Fourniture I have created and saved for you to try at:

Stereo Mixtures...each one uses 8 slots of polyphony, the MX will do 64 notes of
polyphony...do the math.
If you play a four-part hymn using one of these mixtures, you will be using 32
notes of
polyphony at a time.
Playing a French work that calls for 10 keys depressed at one time...well, there
are a few...
would ask the moduel to play 80 notes at one time, which it cannot.
And, using both 8 Rank Mixtures uses 16 slots or notes of polyphony.
These are stereo mixtures. The Scharf and Fourniture in the Basic 76 Stop set
are stereo
mixtures as well, but only 4 ranks, so there are no polyphony considerations
using them.

The module has samples and voices built in and organ stop samples on
the EXP Card.
Rodgers has created some TONE LISTS, for example, the list of voices in
the center of the owner's manual that give you a choice of selecting
voices using PGM MSB LSB 001 093 126 (or 127)
This gives you access to the samples that are in the box and on the
card.
If you have an organ that cannot send PGM MSB LSB, you may be able to
use the second set of numbers, which have 000 listed as the LSB...if
your organ will send PGM and VAR that may be enough to access the
voices in those sets.
Same TONE LIST VOICES, just a different set of numbers....sort of like
a "party-line" telephone.
BUT these tone list voices are CREATED from the aforementioned
samples...yes, you can go into the module, find, tweak and layer
samples and create your own stops. But where to put them?
That's why there is a BANK 87, the USER bank...where you can store your
favorite sounds.
And this nice thing is that you may set the MX to boot up in Bank 87,
so that all that you need to do it turn everything on, and touch only
one key on the organ to get any of the 128 voices/samples/layers.
The process, once you have the MX set:
HOLD SET
Press the MIDI COUPLER you want to use
TOUCH the organ key (starting with bottom manual low C being 1) that is
the number of the voice you want to play.
No need to go in the organ window, set the MSB or LSB...just send PGM.

F. Booting up in Bank 87
Bank 87 is where you can save your favorite voice patches, as well as those you
create.
If you boot up in 87, ANY of the 128 patches can be selected by merely:
1. Hold SET and press the MIDI Coupler you want to program. MIDI Coupler begins
to
flash.
2. Touch the key on the organ that corresponds with the number (PGM) of the
voice patch.
3. MIDI Coupler light is on steady and the voice is ready to play.
Numbering begins with Low C on the bottom manual being 1. Next manual above 61,
and
manual above (or pedalboard)
It is helpful, especially for those playing instruments that can only send
Program Changes,
to have the organ and module boot up on BANK 87.
Why?
If you have a recent Rodgers that will send PGM MSB and LSB to the module, you
can boot
up in Bank 87 by:
1. Set each MIDI coupler to a PGM number of your choice, MSB 87, LSB 0. When
they are
set, hold SET and turn the TRANSPOSE knob to the right, which puts you in the
MIDI Menu.
Hold SET and 0 (cancel) together until the display says MIDI SETTINGS SAVED.
Now the organ boots up in Bank 87 and the One Touch System above will work
whenever
you turn the organ on.
However, if you had an earlier Rodgers, you need to set the MX to come up in
Bank 87.
To do this, play the MIDI file MXLoad.mid that is included in the zip file you
downloaded
from the FreeStops™ page.
When you play this file you should hear 6 or 8 Organ Stops playing from the, one
note for
each Stop. Once they have played that indicates that the module is set to Bank
87.
Now you need to save that Bank to the MX memory. To do this:
1. On the MX PRESS and HOLD VOLUME and PRESS VALUE.
2. Turn TONE CATEGORY to EXP
3. PRESS VALUE (first time)
4. PRESS VALUE (second time)
The bank is saved.
Nothing is lost, other banks may still be used.

I want to find one of the midilive type pieces tahts best for the MX where you
play along with the orchestrated music that is particularly good for my set up,
i.e Trillium 927 with MX200 and MR200 Would the Tim Thompsons festival piece
be the one to get? I truly like this idea of what you are doing, but I want best
effect on my Organ when I test it. I purchased the Royal Ceremonial but I am
not sure that was my best move for my set up. Can you advise and in return I
will purchase. I LIKE THE VOICING ON THE Widor toccata by the way. Thank you

Hello Noel,
I added to my own bank your two stops mixture sharf VIII and
fourniture VIII. With the great French baroque mixtures, they sound
very fine and great. I modified my own bank 87 with your own stops
added on the file section http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RodgersMXMR
with the excel stops file for the 128 stops list with PGR MSB...
Due to my rodgers Insignia 577 wich has only three midi tabs (SW,
Great and pedal) I'mixed some mutation stops in order to have a
great "jeu de tierce" based on the 16' in the french baroque duets
with the "jeu de tierce" based on the 8'.

The Instant Organist pistons [see the Frog Music Site for the Instant
Organist] build from soft celestes to full organ on pistons 1-6 and
then an orchestral or gospel setting on piston 7.
After loading this bank, set piston 1 to the Instant Organist stops
and add PGM 1 MSB 87 LSB 0....and the rest using PGM 2-7.
