90 Minutes

Monday, November 30th, 2009, Noel Jones, AAGO will present a workshop for church organists, church organ committees and choir directors at Rose Music Company, Inc, in Louisville, TN.

Starting at 7:00, the hour and a half workshop covers understanding the families of organ tone and choosing organ stops for ensemble and solo use. It concludes with the introduction of a logical system of setting pistons, a system he developed  when Jones traveled with his organ teacher, George Markey, as Markey performed on some of the great pipe organs of the world. “Playing a full recital on the road with just a few hours of time to prepare and get to know the organ meant that Dr. Markey had to be organized so his registration techniques were very clear and simple.” say Jones who studied with Markey at the Guilmant Organ School in New York City.

Participants say that Jones has an ability to take a very complex subject and make it simple and easy to understand.  According to Jones, “Many organists have not had much opportunity to study the organ, so what lessons they had were spent learning how to play the organ keyboards and not how to set the stops.  Most organists are pianists so teaching them how to hold keys down for the full length of notes and do finger substitutions ties their fingers into knots, since these are things you rarely have to do on the piano. And all too often, they don’t get the chance to study long enough to get into registration details”

Setting the stops is like choosing voices on a MIDI keyboard. But a MIDI keyboard only lets you layer two sounds, while an organ permits you to layer twenty, thirty or even more. “It’s like painting with colors rather than making pencil sketches.” according to Jones, who has performed as an organist and conductor in the United States, Germany and Italy.

This free workshop has a limited number of seats available. Call 865 970-2375 or go to the Rose Music Company, Inc. website at
