These drives are spring loaded to open and shut to protect the contacts. Above, in the masthead, is a picture of it closed; to the left, it is open.

The clear plastic end, which may be used to hook it to a lanyard, also has a dual function - it lights greenish/yellow in use, and flashes while data is being accessed or loaded to it, to insure that it is working properly. This also serves to warn you to pause before removing the drive while still writing a file.
